Glass Caricatures

Have your customers or students reflect on what they like most about their personality then think of a creative way to portay it in glass. Use buffalo chips to create a mosaic look, and multipens can be used to add outlines and names! This project is easy even if you have never fused glass before!

Materials:

6” Clear Square Blank (GBS-6-100)

Buffalo Chips and Glass Bits in assorted colors

Black Multipen with Metal Tip (3115)

Paper & Pencils

Portable Glass Work Surface (Fun Foam)

Elmer’s Gel Glue and Q-tips

8” square of Thinfire

High Temp Stamen Wire (ST-952) – Two 1” pieces

Creating a Glass Caricature:

1. Trace your square blank onto a piece of paper.

2. Draw an exaggerated picture of yourself. A drawing that expresses your personality or your alter ego allows for extra creativity when building your design in glass. Add a hat, sunglasses, funky hair, etc.

3. Center your drawing underneath the glass blank and use it as a guide to create your caricature with Buffalo Chips. Remember, caricatures are a little wacky so don’t be afraid to get wild with your colors.

4. Use Buffalo Chips and/or Bits as a border to finish the piece.

5. Use Multipens for accents or to finish specific areas of the project and to write your name or initials.

6. Apply glue in sections or use a Q-tip to apply glue to each glass piece.

7. Cut and bend a small amount of High Temp Stamen Wire to create a hook. Bend each end approximately 90 ° to help wire stay in place after firing. Place the wire hook on top of your glass base and cover with a large Buffalo Chip or Bit. Be sure to use glue to keep both in place during firing.

8. Contour Fuse your Glass Project on a sheet of Thinfire paper using the firing program below.

9. Glue colored paper to the back for a Warhol-esque look.
