Warm Glass!

Select Your Mold

Select which mold you will slump into prior to beginning your fusing project so that you will work on the glass blank that is the appropriate size and shape. If you slump with glass that is too big for the mold it will drape over the edge, causing the glass to seize to the mold. Refer to the range guidelines in our catalog to select the appropriate sized glass blank for your desired mold. Apply primer to the slump mold or bisque shape and let it dry completely before slumping the fused glass.

Prime Your Mold

It is necessary to apply mold primer (Primo Primer) to any mold or bisque shape that you will use as a mold. Primer keeps glass from sticking to the mold just as kiln wash keeps glazed pottery from sticking to kiln shelves; however the two are not interchangeable. Primo Primer is specifically designed for working with glass.

A large brush is ideal for applying mold primer - our Large Hake Brush (BI# 7799) works well. It is best to allow primer to dry for 24 hours prior to using the mold. Some experts suggest that molds should be primed and "cured" in a kiln at 500 degrees F with a 20 minute hold to insure that mold is completely dry. Slumping glass while the primer is still wet can cause the piece to develop bubbles as the primer dries during firing. A mold may be used several times prior to re-applying primer. When doing so, be sure to clean out any clumps of primer or bits of glass.
