Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, a naval flag designer, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, designed the first official U.S. flag in 1777 for the Navy. Other iterations of the Star Spangled Banner, like the Betsy Ross flag with the stars arranged in a circle, arose in the following years, and as states were added, the design shifted slightly until July 4th, 1960. That was the date when the state of Hawaii was added to the Union and it was the birth of the flag we know today!
